πΊ Best Things to Do in Hawaii:
All Islands
While most of the best things to do in Hawaii are specific to an individual location, there are a few things you should try to include on your Hawaii itinerary, no matter which island you go to.
These include things such as sharing some aloha with a local honu (Hawaiian for sea turtle) or watching the sunset and trying to spot the famous “green flash”.
Below are the top 10 things to do in Hawaii that you can do on any island.
At no cost to you, we receive a small amount for any bookings made using the links below.
1. Visit all SEVEN Inhabited Hawaiian Islands (including The Forbidden Island of Ni’ihau!)
Most people don’t realize that there are actually SEVEN inhabited Hawaiian islands.
To truly complete the ultimate Hawaii bucket list, the first and most important checkbox to tick is visiting all seven islands including the four major islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Big Island as well as the three sister islands of Lanai, Molokai, and Ni’ihau.
Find out how to visit all 7 in our 14-day Hawaii Island Hopping itinerary.
2. Snorkel with Sea Turtles (Honu)
If you have never swam with a sea turtle, you are in for a far more spiritual and memorable experience than you are probably imagining.
Watching these peaceful creatures effortlessly glide through the crystal clear waters of Hawaii and coming up for air together is one of those lifetime memories you will always cherish.
3. Go Whale Watching
There are several channels through Hawaii that are like underwater freeways for migrating whales.
If you visit Hawaii during the migration season, typically Nov-Apr or thereabouts, be sure to spend plenty of time looking out at the horizon to spot the bouncing tales and spraying air of whales on the move.
4. Attend a Traditional Hawaiian Luau
Learn about Hawaiian heritage and ancient stories told through ceremonial dance and display while being served delicious Hawaiian cuisine… what could be better?
A feast for all the senses, attending a traditional luau is a must on your Hawaii bucket list.
5. See Hawaii from Above (helicopter tour)
If you have never been on a helicopter, it is hard to describe how much it changes your perspective.
It is one thing to drive around the Hawaiian islands observing it by land, but quite another to truly appreciate the dramatic landscape from the air.
6. Enjoy a Romantic Sunset Sail
Adventures aside, part of visiting Hawaii is enjoying a well-deserved vacation.
Take at least one night on your visit to slow down and enjoy the sunset while being treated to cocktails and finger foods.
7. Try to Spot the “The Green Flash”
There is a split second as the sun crosses exactly halfway below the horizon, where a green flash appears.
One of the favorite nightly traditions on Hawaii is to peer out on clear evenings and look for the legendary green flash.
8. Go stargazing and find the Milky Way
If you live in a city, you have probably never seen stars as bright as you will in some places in Hawaii.
Take a night to enjoy the heavenly display of our night skies from some of Hawaii’s famous dark sky reserves.
You can do this by yourself or book a stargazing tour to reach even darker skies.
9. Learn to Surf
Considered the home of surfing, Hawaii is the best place in the world to learn to surf. Although, more accurately, you’ll probably spend most of the day learning to fall off a surfboard!
Even if you never successfully ride a wave, there is something therapeutic about bobbing around the incredible Pacific Ocean under the warm tropical sun.
10. Find an Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal
Hawaii is the only place to find the appropriately named Hawaiian monk seal.
While this animal is endangered, it is still somewhat common to see one resting on the shore during a visit to Hawaii if you do a bit of beach hopping and exploring.
π Best things to do in Hawaii:
Big Island
The Big Island is the “youngest” Hawaiian island and is actually still being formed to this day! Few places in the entire world offer the ability to see new earth being created before your eyes, but the adventurous and fortunate will see exactly that at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
What’s more, did you know the Big Island has the best snorkeling in Hawaii? Beyond the endless coral gardens, there is also a high population of giant manta rays that you can snorkel with each night as they come belly to belly with visitors for their evening feast.
If you are visiting the Big Island of Hawaii and want the most complete guide available, open our BEST THINGS TO DO ON BIG ISLAND ULTIMATE GUIDE with 101 activities, tours, and more, to read next.
Below are the top 10 best things to do on the Big Island of Hawaii.

If you only book one tour on the Big Island, make it this one. No snorkel experience is required and it is a memory that will last a lifetime.
12. See the Lava Lake at Hawaii Volcanoes NP
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is one of the few places you can actually gaze into an active volcano! Talk about something for the Hawaii bucket list!
If possible, try to time your visit for twilight or after dark to ensure the best possible viewing conditions.

13. Snorkel at Captain Cook Monument
Considered the best spot on the best Hawaiian island for snorkeling, booking a snorkel tour to Captain Cook Monument is at the top of most first-time visitors’ lists of the best things to do in Hawaii on Big Island.

Not only is the olivine-tinted sand unusual in color, but it is the softest sand on the island.
51. Go Stargazing at Mauna Kea or Volcanoes NP
The night skies in Hawaii are truly special, but nowhere in the state are they darker than on the less-developed Big Island.
While there are plenty of places to observe the celestial beauty, Mauna Kea and Volcanoes NP are known for having the darkest skies and best stargazing in Hawaii.
You will find a number of tours that will take you to these dark sky areas and allow you to learn more about the night skies.

On no island is this more apparent than Big Island, which features a collection of otherworldly black sand beaches such as the turtle sanctuary of Punalu’u, featured here.

If you have never been on a helicopter before, there is no better place to do it than Kauai.

π
Best things to do in Hawaii:
Molokai
Not many people will visit Molokai at all, but those who do are in for a treat. “The Friendly Island”, as it’s known, has a tragically dark but fascinating history to learn about.
Beyond its origins, visits to Molokai mean seeing a part of the world few ever do. The sea cliffs of Molokai are the highest in North America and the beaches are amongst the quietest in Hawaii.
If you are looking for things to do in Hawaii that most never experience, consider island hopping to Molokai.
The top 5 things to do on Molokai are:
51. Kalaupapa National Historic Park Mule Ride
Riding a mule through Kalaupapa National Historic Park is a fun but humbling experience.
This former fishing village became a leper colony during an outbreak in the 1880s. Like much of the island, the history of the Kalaupapa region is marked by exile and illness. It is also marked by love and courage.
To reach the peninsula, your mule will help you along a 3-mile trail descending 1700ft down the tallest sea cliffs in the world. Enjoy the incredible views as you go, ending at sea level to a tranquil scene.
Permits and tours are required to visit Kalaupapa National Historic Park. You can find out more information on the NPS website.
52. Halawa Valley
Halawa Valley is where you will find some of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Hawaii.
While it does not have the prestige of the famous Road to Hana, the scenic drive to the Halawa Valley is an exhilarating experience with awesome coastal views over the Molokai shoreline.
If you have an interest in the culture and history of Hawaii, one of the best things to do in Hawaii on Molokai is to take the Guided Halawa Valley Cultural Hike. Throughout the tour, you will hear stories of the valley from the men who were born and raised here.
The tour ends at Moβoula Falls where participants will enjoy lunch with an optional dip in its refreshing waters.
53. Explore Kaunakakai
The historic town of Kaunakakai can be explored on foot or by bike.
In the town, travelers will discover local shops and restaurants, as well as historic sites such as Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove, Church Row, and the Alii Fishpond.
This peaceful town has barely changed at all in over a century, making for an interesting glimpse into the Hawaii of the past.
54. Go Beach Hopping on Hawaii’s Quietest Beaches
Most people looking for the best things to do in Hawaii are really trying to find the best beaches. However, few ever discover the quiet, beautiful beaches of Molokai.
As the Friendly Isle requires a bit more planning than the major islands, those who make the effort are rewarded with miles of unspoiled beauty and no crowds.
In fact, it is not uncommon to have an entire beach to yourself!
Some of the best beaches on Molokai include Halawa Bay, Papohaku Beach, Kapukahehu Beach, and One Aliβi Beach Park.
55. Discover Molokai by Air
One of the best ways to see Molokai is by air.
Boasting the tallest sea cliffs in the world, travel by car or foot is very limited on the island, but helicopter tours provide unlimited vistas and a perspective that is hard to imagine without seeing it for yourself.
π Best things to do in Hawaii:
Lanai
The final, least populated of the public Hawaiian islands is the Maui sister island of Lanai.
For most, a visit to this small isle will consist of little more than a few hours snorkeling off its shores and a moment to soak in the sunshine on one of its pristine beaches. For the explorers, however, there are several incredible places worth visiting.
Below are the top 5 best places to go and things to do on Lanai.
56. Half-Day Beach & Snorkel Adventure from Maui
There are a few different ways to get to Lanai, but the best way is with a half-day snorkel and landing tour.
The recommended Lanai landing tour is one of the best things to do in Hawaii for people visiting Maui. It includes a boat ride to the island; an adventure on its own wherein guests will typically encounter dolphins and, seasonally, migrating whales.
Upon arrival, participants have three hours to explore some of Lanai, and/or relax on one of the best and quietest beaches of Hawaii at Hulopoβe Bay.
57. Walk in the Garden of the Gods at Keahiakawelo
The Garden of the Gods is the most unusual thing to do on Lanai, but also one of the most difficult.
Keahiakawelo, as “The Garden of the Gods” is known locally, features rainbow-colored earth. At a glance, it appears as if one of the many rainbows for which the state is known has melted into the soil.
58. Photograph the red cliff beach at Shark’s Bay
The red cliffs of Shark’s Bay on Lanai is one of the most visually stunning beaches on Hawaii.
Puu Pehe as it is known locally is located beside the beautiful Hulopoβe Bay.
A white sand beach is surrounded by red lava cliffs that come together to create a magical landscape that will please anyone looking for things to do in Hawaii with an interest in photography.
59. Look for the wreckage at Shipwreck Beach
Those with ample time on the small island of Lanai can rent a car and access one of the true hidden gems on Hawaii.
Shipwreck Beach, named for the decaying remains of a crashed boat, is a quiet and stunning beach on the far side of the island that few tourists will ever see.
60. Golf a Jack Nicklaus-Signature Course at Manele
Manele Golf Course is a Jack Nicklaus signature course and is considered one of the best places to golf in the United States. If hitting the links is one of your priorities on a trip to Hawaii, you do not want to miss this remote gem.
π¬ Things NOT to Do in Hawaii
Below is a short list of popular things to do in Hawaii that we do NOT recommend. Some are illegal, some dangerous, and some have cultural considerations that the native Hawaiian people are vehemently against.
With so many amazing things to do in Hawaii, here are some you may hear about that you should avoid.
- Stairway to Heaven
The famous Haiku stairs on Oahu, aka Stairway to Heaven, actually closed in the 1980s. However, tourists have continued to hike them illegally and the local government unanimously decided to have them removed altogether in 2022.
- Swim with Dolphins
While dolphin tours were once a big business in Hawaii, research has shown that interacting with dolphins during sleep cycles can have a damaging impact on the health and well-being of the animals. State law prohibits swimming with, approaching, or remaining within 50 yards of a Hawaiian spinner dolphin.
- Ride a Turtle
We were shocked this had to be included at all, but many people mentioned taking a turtle for a ride as an old pastime. Please never touch wildlife, especially turtles and manta rays, as it stresses them out and can even affect their immune systems. Additionally, sea turtles are protected by federal and state law.
- Visit the Dole Plantation
The Dole Plantation profited from the destruction of the Hawaiian monarchy, which was largely tied to the Dole family. The tour today does little to acknowledge the displacement of Native Hawaiians and the darker history of the plantation.
- Polynesian Cultural Center
Despite touting the preservation of Polynesian culture, it is owned by the Mormon Church and we feel uncomfortable recommending it when there are clear missionary overtones.
- Sea Life Park Hawaii (Ka Moana Luau)
Due to the Park offering hands-on animal tourism and continued captive dolphin encounters, we cannot ethically recommend visiting.
π₯₯ Hawaiian Food to Try
There is a lot to creating an unforgettable Hawaiian vacation beyond the beautiful sights and sounds. In fact, much of the native culture can be found in the food and drink and Polynesian cooking techniques.
For those who want to engage their taste buds in their island exploration, be sure to include sampling the following traditional Hawaiian foods on your island bucket list.
- Mai-Tai
- Loco Moco
