Sea lions frequent Playa Mann and will often engage with swimmers here, making it one of the best places to snorkel in the Galapagos with these inquisitive creatures!

π» Services at Playa Mann
All necessary services for a day at the beach are available at Playa Mann.
However, it is worth reading about each below as there may be a few surprises; especially in the “Restrooms” section…
Food & Beverages
Playa Mann has a small, covered food court where you can purchase local food (“comida tΓpica”) at a surprisingly reasonable rate of $5-$6.
Be aware that most vendors on San Cristobal do not speak English. Accordingly, you may want to brush up on your Spanish, especially when ordering food.
There are technically three “restaurants” within the court and each will have their daily set meal on a sign at the entrance. This typically includes:
- Soup (sopa)
- Juice (jugo)
- Rice (arroz)
- Beans (menestras)
- Salad (ensalada)
- Protein; Beef, Chicken, Fish (carne, pollo, pescado)
- Beer (cerveza)
In addition to these restaurants serving food, you will find a couple of huts on the beach as well as a variety of vendors on the street selling beer, ice cream, fruit, and assorted treats.
Lifeguard
A lifeguard is usually present at Playa Mann during daylight hours, making it one of the safest and most family-friendly beaches in Galapagos.
In addition to keeping an eye on swimmers, the lifeguard will do their best to ensure proper distance is being maintained between tourists and Galapagos wildlife.
Restrooms
There are bathrooms at Playa Mann, but they come with a few important warnings!
First, there is no running water! In order to flush, you will have to use a bucket to scoop water and fill the bowl. As you may have guessed, there is also no way to wash your hands afterward. We highly recommend packing some eco-friendly hand sanitizer!
Second, there is no toilet paper at most public restrooms in Galapagos, including those at Playa Mann. You will need to bring your own.
As you can imagine, they get a bit grim and should be avoided if possible.
Shelter and Shade
The south side of the beach offers a covered, shaded area with benches. However, you cannot rely on this area for shade as it is typically occupied by sea lions!
You will find some areas shaded by the shrubbery that grows around the edge of the beach. These spots, once again, are not just popular with other beachgoers, but also amongst sea lions.
Do not be surprised if you leave your towel and find a sea lion has traipsed over it or is now lying on it!
We saw a sea lion barge straight through a shaded area where a couple were sunbathing (forcing them to jump up out of the way) to get to a more comfortable spot!
π¦ Wildlife at Playa Mann
Playa Mann provides the quintessential Galapagos experience. The moment you step into the chilly but inviting waters, you are likely to be greeted by playful sea lions swimming about!
In addition to a handful of sea lions, you may also find marine iguanas warming themselves in the sun.
Be sure to maintain your distance and never touch the animals! The law in Galapagos National Park is to keep at least 6 feet (2 meters) away from any wildlife, including selfie sticks.
In the water, sea lion cubs will often try to play with humans, swimming and spinning about. They obviously don’t know the law! Not to worry, they are not dangerous and their mothers will do a good job of letting you know if you are getting too close.

βοΈ Best Time to Visit Playa Mann
The best times to visit Playa Mann are very early in the morning and at sunset.
Early morning is the best time to visit Playa Mann if you want the best chance to enjoy the wildlife and have some peace. The earlier, the better.

Playa Mann is also the favorite destination for sunset on San Cristobal. A clear westerly horizon provides an unbeatable viewing stage for a beautiful sunset.
Be warned, however, that this is no secret! Sunset is often the busiest time of all to visit Playa Mann.

π‘ Faro Playa Mann (Playa Mann Lighthouse)
At the south end of the beach, you will find a pretty red and white striped lighthouse. It is well worth taking a few minutes to walk along the short boardwalk to the lighthouse.
The walk is less than 350ft (100m) and along the way you are likely to encounter many lounging sea lions, as well as beautiful views looking back towards Playa Mann and out towards Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
πΈ Enjoying Playa Mann Responsibly
You will find a signpost as you enter Playa Mann with a list of things that are and are not allowed at the beach.
Permitted | Not Permitted |
Snorkeling | Pets |
Photography | Littering |
Swimming | Playing with balls |
Kayaking | Alcoholic drinks |
Bicycles |
Although alcohol is listed as not allowed, this does not seem to be something that is enforced, and is even sold at the beach.
Please enjoy responsibly and be respectful of these rules so that the beach can continue to be enjoyed without heavier restrictions.
While not regulated, we also recommend bringing reef-safe sunscreen and wearing long-sleeve sun protection to reduce your impact on the marine environment here.
Most importantly, don’t be this person!
Be respectful of wildlife. Maintain your distance and never touch the animals! The law in Galapagos National Park is to keep at least 6 feet (2 meters) away from any wildlife, including selfie sticks.
